AC Not Cooling? Try These First
Before you pay for a service call in Orange, run through this two-minute checklist. About one in five “broken AC” calls we get turns out to be something the homeowner could fix in thirty seconds — and we’d rather tell you that over the phone for free.
The 5-Point Homeowner Checklist
1. Thermostat settings. Make sure it’s on COOL (not just ON or FAN) and set at least 3 degrees below room temperature. Dead thermostat batteries are a surprisingly common culprit.
2. The air filter. A clogged filter chokes airflow and can even freeze the system. If you can’t see light through it, replace it.
3. The breaker. Check your electrical panel for a tripped breaker labeled AC, condenser, or air handler. Reset it once — if it trips again, stop and call; that’s an electrical fault.
4. The outdoor unit. Is the condenser fan spinning? Is the unit packed with leaves or cottonwood fluff? A gentle rinse with a garden hose (power off) restores a lot of cooling capacity.
5. The condensate switch. Many systems shut themselves off when the drain line clogs and the pan fills. Water around the indoor unit is the giveaway.
When It’s Time to Call a Professional
Ice on the refrigerant lines, a compressor that hums but won’t start, breakers that keep tripping, or warm air despite a clean filter all point to problems that need gauges, meters, and a licensed tech — refrigerant levels, capacitors, contactors, and electrical faults aren’t DIY territory. Our AC repair team diagnoses the actual fault and quotes you before any work starts.
